Mount Morrison is a fantastic, one of a kind trail this close to Denver. It includes gorgeous views, and is generally not super populated. On a clear day you can see from Pikes Peak in the South, to Longs Peak in the North. Looking for a first step to experience what it is like to do 14ers? Look no further! This trail climbs a steep 2,000+ feet in less than two miles. The last stretch of this hike includes a bit of scrambling to get you used to using your hands and feet on the mountain. The scrambling is fairly easy and doesn't exceed low class 3, but is a fun, perfect learning experience to build your comfort.
The trailhead for Mount Morrison starts right off entrance 4 in Red Rocks Park. There is a bit of parking right next to the trailhead, or you could park anywhere further down the road in the park and walk to the trail. The climb of Mount Morrison begins by following some power lines up a steep grade without many switchbacks. There is not much shade and this trail can get quite hot, bring lots of water!
After following the power lines to top of the hill, you will be greeted with some spectacular mountain vistas to the West, including Mount Evans. The trail goes right as you start your ascent up Mount Morrison. The entire trek is steep, gaining over 2000 feet in elevation in less than two miles is no joke! As you approach the summit, you get to some of the most fun spots. You will have to use your hands as you pull yourself up some large boulders on the mountain, a perfect intro to scrambling. There is some loose rock, and can be slippery, so take your time and be cautious!
Arriving at the summit, you will be treated to gorgeous 360 views. You can see pretty much all of Denver to the East, and Mount Evans and snowcapped peaks to the West. To the North you can see the Flatirons and all the way to Longs Peak on a clear day. To the South you can see Pikes Peak on a clear day.
Overall this is a perfect hike for someone wanting some elevation gain, and a challenge without driving far from Denver. It is a bit less well known than other trails in the area and offers spectacular views!
This steep trail is a great place for a workout! It's not very shaded so be sure to bring lots of water!
